Superfoods: What do they Really Mean?

What is a superfood, really?

All that the trending buzzword means is how much nutrient density a food has. Or, how much nutrition a food provides given the amount of calories.

A quick example would be a 400 calorie donut and 400 calories of an apple with peanut butter. The second option has a higher nutrient density given the amount of antioxidants, fiber, and plant based protein. Whereas the donut is simply sugar filled with empty nutrition.

Antioxidants help to reduce inflammation, the symptoms of chronic disease, help to fight cancer cells, and studies show a decrease in anxiety and depression. Fiber allows the blood to maintain an even blood sugar level.

These kinds of foods also hep with hormonal balance, which impacts daily function, mood, appetite, sleep, stress, pre & post natal care, osteoporosis, and more.

The main point is that is a good idea to balance eating processed foods and dining out with homemade meals using plenty of nutrient dense superfoods!
